Patio's & Outdoor Living Space

All Things Concrete Approach to Patios

Patios can add a great living area outdoors in Kansas City. When patios are designed and constructed properly, the space should feel like an extension of the home. It’s important to work with the architectural and design features inside and out of the home. An example of this is by using a similar element on the patio as what might be inside the home in the kitchen. We recommend colors of products used for patios coordinate with colors on the exterior of the home at the very least. Another approach of coordinating a patio with your home is by using some of the architectural features of the home to drive the patio design. Let’s propose it might be difficult to coordinate a curved patio with a very linear Ranch style home, whereas a rectilinear shaped patio might serve the space with more fluidity.

Design & Elements

Kansas City patio designs are typically hour glass or rectangular in shape. Free-form, or island like structures are also are used in some cases when the setting is in a natural space. Patios along the Ward Parkway corridor, Mission Hills, and in the Plaza area are often times constructed with a natural stone because of the abundance of natural stone present on the homes. In these particular areas of Kansas City, bluestone patios are a highly desired item. Bluestone is a classic, timeless stone that has been used on the East Coast for over 200 years. The most common application of bluestone in a Kansas City patio is considered an Ashlar Slate pattern which consists of 5-6 different sizes of squares and rectangles installed in a random or field pattern. In addition to beautiful bluestone, earth-tone flagstone is often used on patios. The naturally occurring irregular shaped pieces of flagstone hold many warm warm tones, which coordinate well with many homes in these areas. Brick and limestone are also desirable materials used when interlocking both modern and old world themed homes. Popular Patio Options

Another very popular option for Kansas City patios are a product commonly known as pavers. Pavers, or decorative paver tiles are generally more affordable and require a lot less long-term maintenance than natural stone. Pavers tiles come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors, which make it very easy to coordinate the patio with the existing home elements. Paver surfaces can also be constructed by overlaying existing concrete as long as the underlying concrete is structurally sound. Decorative stamped concrete and colored/stained concrete is also a frequently used option on patios. Stamped concrete is less expensive than natural stone and pavers, and when designed and constructed patios can look great. However, a topical sealant must be used on stamped concrete quite frequently in order to retain the color and finish. The sealants can be very slick if non-slip ad-mixture is not considered. Color can be added into the concrete for new patios or it can be applied after wards. If your patio is a candidate, color/stain can be added to an existing substrate. Combining natural stone with a colored concrete patio has a stunning effect and ties beauty with affordability.
